In the year 1974, Melghat was announced as a tiger reserve in India. The term “Melghat” means the meeting of Ghats and that is exactly what the whole area is. The unending stretch of hills, jagged cliffs, along with the steep climbs feature the forest. The moss-covered forest floor along with the thick undergrowth defines the wildlife sanctuary. Melghat Tiger Reserve is the home of the Royal Bengal Tiger, jungle cats, leopards, dholes, hyenas, jackals, wolves, and foxes are some of the many animals that live here. The Indian bison, sambar, barking deer, chital, chinkara, chausingha, nilgai, mouse deer, and blackbuck are also found in abundance here. Different species of snakes are reported to be present in this jungle. Bird watchers will be able to spot more than 250 species of birds.
During the summer season Melghat reaches a maximum temperature of 45 degree Celsius. The winters feature cool and soothing temperature. You should plan your trip around the months of December to May. Summer months promise a higher chance of spotting different wild animals. Wildlife jungle safari is allowed from the starting of December to the end of June. You can go ahead and book the jungle safari in advance to avoid any kind of hassle. The park remains closed all throughout the monsoon season. Wildlife Jungle Safari can be availed in Melghat Tiger Reserve from the beginning of December till the end of June. Private vehicles, jeeps, and mini-buses are allowed in the inside of the jungle. Two safaris are conducted for tourists each day. You will enter the jungle according to your booking. The morning jungle safari starts at 6 am and the evening one usually begins at 4 pm. Your ride into the jungle will commence when it is full. You will be accompanied by a professional driver and a guide that is familiar with the different sections of the forest. Tourists in private car need to make room for the guide before they enter the Melghat Tiger Reserve.
The nearest airport to this tiger reserve is Akola. It is 160 kms ride to the National Park. You can also choose to travel from Nagpur airport that is 260 kms away.
